Data-Driven Putter Fitting with SAM PuttLab
Match the Putter to the Player – not the Player to the Putter

A properly fitted putter is fundamental to consistent putting.
When the putter does not match the player’s setup and natural stroke, compensations become almost unavoidable. Incorrect length, unsuitable head balance, the wrong loft, or an inappropriate grip can influence face rotation, stroke path, impact quality, and distance control.
SAM PuttLab provides a structured, objective fitting process that helps coaches and fitters identify the putter specifications that best support each player’s individual motion.
Turn putter fitting into a measurable, professional, and highly convincing customer experience.
Why Data-Driven Putter Fitting Matters
Traditional fitting often relies heavily on appearance, preference and feel.
SAM PuttLab adds precise measurement to the process. More than 70 parameters can be used to evaluate the player’s setup, stroke movement, impact conditions and consistency.
This allows fitters to:
- Separate equipment-related issues from technical issues
- Compare different putters objectively
- Identify the causes of inconsistent putting
- Make clear and understandable recommendations
- Increase the player’s confidence in the fitting result
The objective is not to create one theoretically perfect stroke. It is to find a putter that supports the player’s natural motion, reduces compensations, and improves repeatability.
A Guided Fitting Process

SAM PuttLab guides the fitter through the key stages of both static and dynamic putter fitting.
Static Fitting
The purpose of the static fitting is to establish an optimized player setup that serves as the baseline for the subsequent dynamic fitting. This initial setup is defined by the following functional objectives:
- Aiming: Position the eyes relative to the ball to compensate for individual aiming tendencies.
- Putter Length: Select a putter length that supports the player's natural posture, arm position, and eye position. Key reference lines include the eyes to the ball, shoulders to toes, and the shaft toward the elbow.
- Static Lie: Establish a setup that allows the putter to sit naturally on the ground at address.
- Static Loft: Position the hands in a neutral or slightly forward-leaning position to produce a proper dynamic loft at impact.
The objective is to create a comfortable, balanced, and repeatable setup that enables the player to address the ball naturally while providing the functional conditions required for consistent putting performance.
Assessment of the putting setup:

Dynamic Fitting
Dynamic fitting is the second step of the fitting process. Using SAM PuttLab, the player's stroke is objectively measured and analyzed based on a series of approximately 7–10 putts.
The collected data is used to evaluate and optimize the following fitting parameters:
- Head Type: Match the putter head design to the player's stroke pattern.
- Head Balance: Match the putter head balance to the relative rotation characteristics.
- Dynamic Loft and Lie: Optimize impact loft and lie to achieve consistent impact, launch and roll.
- Grip Type and Size: Select a grip that complements the player's consistency and skill level.
- Optional – Hosel and Offset: Fine-tune visual alignment and face presentation at address.
- Optional – Head and Shaft Weighting: Optimize feel, tempo, and stroke stability through appropriate weight distribution.
The objective of the dynamic fitting is to validate and refine the baseline established during the static fitting by matching the putter specifications to the player's measured stroke. Every recommendation is based on objective performance data rather than assumptions, and the results are documented in concise, data-driven fitting reports.
EasyFit and PerfectFit Protocols
SAM PuttLab offers two guided fitting protocols for different levels of detail.
EasyFit
A fast, efficient fitting process based on one measurement.
EasyFit covers the most important fitting elements and is ideal for:
- Standard customer fittings
- Golf shops and fitting centers
- Coaching sessions
- Events and fitting days
PerfectFit
A more comprehensive two-measurement process.
PerfectFit also evaluates advanced fitting elements such as:
- Shaft offset
- Additional head weight
- Shaft weighting
- More detailed comparison of putter configurations

Both protocols guide the fitter step by step, creating a process that is repeatable, efficient, and easy for the player to understand.
See the Difference Between Putters
SAM PuttLab comparison protocols make it possible to evaluate different putters and specifications directly.
Instead of relying on a player’s impression alone, fitters can compare measurable differences in:
- Aim and face direction
- Stroke path and rotation
- Impact consistency
- Tempo and timing
- Launch conditions
- Overall repeatability
This gives players and coaches clear evidence of which putter performs best for their individual putting stroke.

Clear Results Players Can Understand
At the end of the fitting process, the SAM EasyFit report translates the measured stroke data into practical equipment recommendations.

The report can summarize specifications including:
- Head type
- Head balance
- Length
- Loft
- Lie
- Grip
- Offset
- Head weight
- Shaft weight
This gives the player a professional fitting result they can understand, remember, and use when selecting or configuring a putter. The report can be stored as PDF and sent per email e.g. to a retail store for ordering a custom putter.
New Fitting Features in SAM PuttLab 8.1
The latest update expands the fitting capabilities of SAM PuttLab.
Improved Fitting Reports
Enhanced reports and sample graphs make fitting results easier to interpret and present to the player.

Swing Plane and Face Plane Visualization
New visualizations show how the putter moves through three-dimensional space.
This gives fitters deeper insight into the relationship between stroke movement, face rotation, and putter design – particularly when selecting a suitable putter face design.
Zero Torque Putter Support
Zero Torque putters are now available as selectable options within the fitting protocols, including graphical representations in the fitting results.
These additions make the fitting process even more current, comprehensive and relevant to today’s putter market.
A Premium Service for Every Level of Player

Professional putter fitting is not only relevant for tour players.
Beginners, club golfers, elite amateurs and professionals can all benefit from a putter that supports a more consistent setup and stroke.
For coaches, golf academies, fitting centers and retailers, SAM PuttLab creates an opportunity to offer:
- A premium fitting service
- A clear point of differentiation
- Greater customer trust
- Objective product comparisons
- Additional coaching and fitting revenue
